What is Vitrectomy Surgery?
Vitrectomy surgery is a surgical operation for diseases occurring in the back of the eye. Bleeding may occur in the eye for a number of reasons. At the same time, membrane formation may occur in the eye due to diabetes. Vitrectomy surgery is needed both to stop the bleeding and to peel the membranes formed in the eye.
In addition to these, if there is detachment in the eye, the retina is replaced and the ruptured areas are lasered. The gel called vitreous in the inner structure of the eye is cleaned with this surgery.
For Which Diseases Is Vitrectomy Surgery Performed?
Vitrectomy surgery can be performed for many diseases affecting the vitreous and retina in the eye. Vitrectomy surgery may be decided to be performed for the following diseases:
- Severe eye infections
- Eye traumas
- Removal of foreign bodies in the eye
- Development of thin membranes in the retinal layer
- Macular hole
- Visual problems caused by diabetes
- Retinal detachment
- Haemorrhages occurring in the internal structure of the eye
Vitrectomy surgery can be performed to eliminate the above-mentioned disorders. This surgery may also be necessary for some patients with age-related macular degeneration. When the diseases occurring in the retinal region of the eye are left untreated and left alone, the ability to see gradually decreases after a while. This leads to a serious decrease in visual performance and vision loss may be permanent. The decrease in visual performance in people causes the eyes to shrink, redness and many other problems. The biggest reason why vitrectomy surgery is recommended is to improve the quality of life by increasing the visual performance of people. This surgical operation may require a different process for each eye. Some patients may require more than one surgery.
What is the Process Before Vitrectomy Surgery?
Local anaesthesia is applied for people who will undergo vitrectomy surgery . Therefore, there are some points that patients should pay attention before the operation. If patients are taking blood thinners, this medication should be discontinued approximately 5 days before the operation. In addition, diabetics and blood pressure patients should take their medications without interruption, which is an important issue emphasised by the doctor.
How is Vitrectomy Surgery Performed?
For vitrectomy surgery, people must first undergo certain measurements. It is important to undergo some controls such as ECG and blood pressure. In addition, the patient is given drops several times before the operation to enlarge the pupil. The operation takes maximum 2 hours. However, the detail of the procedure and the type of the disease are effective on the duration. Local anaesthesia is applied to the patient during vitrectomy surgery, but general anaesthesia can also be applied for pediatric patients and rare cases. During the operation, the eye is entered into the eye and 3 holes are drilled in the white part of the eye called sclera.
The operation is started by entering the eye with a cutting probe or laser from these areas. Anaesthetising the eye before the procedure allows the patient not to feel anything. The procedures are performed according to the type of disease. The membranes on the retina are peeled or cleaned.
Recovery Process After Vitrectomy Surgery
At the beginning of vitrectomy surgery, it may be necessary to use a buffer material instead of the vitreous gel that is cleaned from the inside of the eye. These materials can be silicone oil, air or gas. If silicone oil is given to the eye, this substance should be cleaned before the end of 6 months after the operation. If SF6 gas is administered, the vision of the person may decrease on the first day after the operation is completed, but the gas gradually evaporates and the eye starts to see normally in about two weeks. After the operation is completed, the eye is bandaged and closed. After the operation is completed, the patient can return home the same day. However, he/she must be examined the next day. The eye is opened and measurements are taken and the drops given by the doctor are started to be used. Failure to treat retinal diseases on time may cause people to completely lose their vision in the future.
