What is an Eye Test?
An eye test is a series of tests used to evaluate your eyes and eyesight. These tests are performed by ophthalmologists during a comprehensive eye examination. Eye tests use different methods to assess your visual acuity, colour vision, the function of your eye muscles, eye pressure and more. Common eye tests include the following.
- Visual Acuity Test
- Colour Blindness Test
- Amsler Grid Test
- Visual Field Test
- Duochrome Test
Visual Acuity Test
A visual acuity test is a test that measures how clearly the eyes can see at a certain distance. This test is used in the diagnosis of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism as well as eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma.
The visual acuity test is performed by an ophthalmologist in a clinical setting. The test proceeds as follows:
- The patient sits or stands upright on an eye chart 6 metres away.
- The doctor takes measurements for each eye separately, closing each eye in turn.
- The eye chart consists of rows of the letter E or other letters and symbols.
- The letters or symbols in each row become smaller and smaller.
- The patient tells the doctor which letters or symbols he can see.
- The doctor records the smallest line the patient can see.
Visual acuity is expressed as a fraction of two numbers. The first number represents the number of lines the patient can see and the second number represents the standard visual distance (4-6 metres). People with visual acuity impairment may be offered options such as glasses, contact lenses or surgical treatment.
Colour Blindness Test
Colour blindness, also commonly known as daltonism, is a visual impairment in which the eyes have difficulty perceiving certain colours or shades of colour. The most common type of colour blindness is red-green colour blindness, which causes difficulty distinguishing between the colours red and green.
Colour blindness testing is a series of diagnostic tests used to assess a person’s ability to perceive colours. Specifically, these tests measure whether a person can correctly distinguish certain colours or the ability to see shades of certain colours.
- The Ishihara test uses circles with dot patterns. Colourblind people may see different numbers or letters in these patterns, or they may see nothing at all.
- The anomaloscopy test measures colour perception by mixing colours and asking the person to identify which colour they see.
- The psuedoisochromatic plates test uses plates with dots where non-colourblind people see 3 colours and colourblind people see different numbers or shapes.
- The Lantern test is performed with a device containing lights of different colours, which is used especially to assess night vision.
The colour blindness test is carried out in a well-lit room and both eyes are tested separately. The doctor will show you a series of coloured shapes or patterns and ask you how you see them. In the treatment of colour blindness, some assistive devices, such as contact lenses and special glasses, help people with colour blindness to better distinguish colours.
Amsler Grid Test
The Amsler Grid test is used to diagnose diseases affecting the centre of vision, such as macular degeneration. It is performed using a simple grid of lines. The doctor tests each eye of the person separately.
It pays attention to whether the lines on the grid are straight, whether any area appears distorted, blurred or dark in colour.
Visual Field Test
A visual field testis used to determine how much of our visual field we can see. It helps to assess how the brain processes the signals it receives from the visual nerves. It is used to diagnose diseases that can narrow the visual field, such as glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa and brain tumours. The test is performed by an ophthalmologist using a special device.
Duochrome Test
The Duochrome test is an eye test that ophthalmologists use to diagnose vision problems such as colour aberration and short-wavelength myopia in their patients. The test is done as follows.
- The patient is asked to close one eye.
- The open eye is presented with two different illuminations with red and green backgrounds.
- Both backgrounds contain letters or symbols of different sizes.
- The patient is asked to say which letters or symbols he/she can see more clearly on both backgrounds.
By comparing the clarity of letters or symbols on red and green backgrounds, the patient’s ability to see clearly in both colours is evaluated.
How Much Is The Eye Test Price?
