What are Eye Floaters and Vitreolysis?

When we open our eyes, we expect to see a clear and clear world. However, sometimes there may be annoying floaters that interfere with our vision. This condition is known as floaters in the eye and can be solved with vitreolysis treatment.

Floaters are seen in the gel-like fluid of the eye called vitreous, which are caused by transparent structures called floaters. These floaters, which can be in different shapes and sizes, become more prominent when looking at light sources.

With aging, the vitreous fluid liquefies and the floaters start to be seen more frequently in front of the eye. Vitreolysis is the process of breaking up the floaters in the eye with the help of laser and removing them from the eye. It is usually painless and takes a short time.

It is a highly effective treatment for patients with floaters that significantly affect their vision, patients with floaters near the centre of the visual field and patients at risk of retinal tear or detachment.

If you are experiencing floaters, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist and enquire about treatment options such as vitreolysis. Early diagnosis and treatment can help preserve your visual function and improve your quality of life.

What are the Causes of Eye Floaters?

Eye floaters are a common condition that can occur for many different reasons. The most common causes are the following.

  • With age, the vitreous fluid liquefies and the floaters become more prominent in front of the eye.
  • Eye trauma can cause floaters to form.
  • Diabetes can lead to degeneration of the vitreoretina and the formation of floaters.
  • Some eye infections can cause inflammation of the vitreoretina and the formation of floaters.
  • In patients with high myopia, vitreous fluid tends to be more fluid and floaters are more common.

What are the Symptoms of Eye Floaters?

Eye floaters are a common visual phenomenon, also known by many people as eye floaters, which can be seen in various forms such as black dots, spots, threads or web spiders. In particular, these floaters are small particles in the vitreous gel, which is usually transparent and fills the back of the eye. Symptoms of eye floaters include the following.

  • floating objects such as black spots, stains, threads or web spiders
  • Light flashes or flashes of light
  • Shading or screening
  • Sudden loss of vision

How to Treat Vitreolysis?

Flying objects that appear in the eyes and prevent vision are annoying for many people. Vitreolysis treatment offers a ray of hope in solving this problem. Vitreolysis is the process of breaking up the jelly particles or blood cells in the vitreous gel of the eye, called floaters, with a laser.

The particles can make it difficult to see by preventing light from reaching the retina. With vitreolysis treatment, these particles are removed and vision is clarified. Vitreolysis is especially applied in cases such as

  • If jelly particles or blood cells in the vitreous gel are dense and significantly obstruct vision, vitreolysis may be considered.
  • Vitreolysis may be a treatment option if damage occurs in the macular region due to aging and floaters increase.
  • In diabetic patients, vitreolysis may be useful in case of damage to blood vessels and floaters due to intraocular haemorrhage.
  • Blood cells formed as a result of retinal rupture may spread to the vitreous gel and cause floaters. In such cases, vitreolysis treatment can also be applied.

Vitreolysis treatment is performed under local anaesthesia in an outpatient and operating theatre setting. The procedure usually takes 15-30 minutes. The treatment stages are as follows.

  • Eyelid and eyelashes are cleaned with antiseptic solution.
  • The eye is anaesthetised with eye drops.
  • A special contact lens is placed in the anterior part of the eye and the floaters are broken up by the laser beam.
  • The eye is cleaned again with eye drops and covered with a protective lens.

How Much Is Vitreolysis Treatment Price?

Vitreolysis treatment price varies depending on the underlying cause and the operation to be performed. The treatment plan to be created by our specialist ophthalmologist depending on the detailed examination result may vary from person to person.

The above information is for informational purposes. If you have any medical concerns or questions, please make an appointment with our ophthalmologists.
