What is Crosslinking Treatment?

In the treatment of keratoconus, crosslinking treatment is the only treatment method applied only by sending a beam without touching the eye. There is no incision or injection in this treatment method. In keratoconus patients, UV-A light is sent to the corneal layer, which is weak and sagging forward, for about half an hour after dropping riboflavin. After this treatment, the cross-links in the corneal layer are strengthened. In keratoconus patients who present with an increase in spectacle number, it is aimed to stop the increase after crosslinking.

Can Crosslinking Treatment be applied together with Corneal Ring Implantation or Corneal Transplantation?

Yes, it can be applied. Crosslinking treatment can be applied before or after corneal ring implantation and after corneal transplantation.

This treatment is generally applied to prevent corneal thinning and deformity in keratoconus patients. However, it may not be suitable for patients with very thin corneas or severe vision loss.

During the procedure, the eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops. Riboflavin drops are applied to the cornea and then treated with UV-A light for about 10-30 minutes. This process is applied to strengthen the biochemical structure of the cornea.

Since local anaesthesia is used during the procedure, no pain is felt. However, mild discomfort, stinging or dryness in the eye may be experienced for a few days after the procedure.
