What is Conjunctiva?
The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye (sclera) and the inside of the eyelids. It helps to moisturise the eye, protect it from infections and protect it from external factors. When the conjunctiva becomes inflamed, a condition called conjunctivitis occurs.
Conjunctivitis, also popularly known as pink eye, is a very common eye disease and can affect people of all ages. There are many different types of conjunctivitis and each type has its own treatment.
Causes and Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
The causes and symptoms of conjunctivitis are especially important for correct treatment. Especially the most common causes of this disease are as follows.
- Infections are the most common cause of conjunctivitis. Infections caused by bacterial, viral or other microorganisms such as chlamydia can cause conjunctivitis.
- Exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander and smoke can cause allergic conjunctivitis.
- Irritants such as smoke, chemicals, pool chlorine and cigarette smoke can cause conjunctivitis.
- Insufficient tear production can cause conjunctivitis to become dry and inflamed.
- Some systemic diseases such as some rheumatic diseases, arthritis and Behcet’s disease can also cause conjunctivitis.
Although conjunctivitis can be seen in many different types for many different reasons, the most common symptoms include the following.
- Redness and itching of the eyes
- Watery eyes or discharge
- Burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
- Crusting on the eyelids
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurred vision
How is Conjunctivitis Diagnosed?
Your doctor can diagnose conjunctivitis by examining your eyes and reviewing your medical history. If necessary, a sample can be taken from the eye to determine the microorganism causing the infection.
Conjunctivitis Types and Treatments
The treatment method applied according to the types of conjunctivitis differs.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis occurs as a result of a bacterial infection. It causes symptoms such as yellow or green coloured burrs, crusting and redness of the eyelids. Antibiotic drops or ointment are used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis.
- Viral conjunctivitis occurs as a result of a viral infection such as a cold or flu. It causes symptoms such as watery eyes, itching and mild redness. Viral conjunctivitis usually resolves spontaneously, but antihistamine drops or artificial tears can be used to relieve symptoms.
- Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust or pet dander. It causes symptoms such as itching, redness and watering of the eyes. Antihistamine drops or steroid drops are used in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.
- Chemical conjunctivitis occurs when the eyes are exposed to chemicals. It causes symptoms such as burning, pain and redness in the eyes. Treatment of chemical conjunctivitis requires washing the eyes with plenty of water and using medication to relieve symptoms.
When is conjunctivitis serious?
Conjunctivitis can cause a variety of symptoms, including redness, itching, watering and burring. Conjunctivitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection, but can also be caused by other factors, including allergies, exposure to chemicals and dry eyes.
Most cases of conjunctivitis are mild and can be treated at home. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms, conjunctivitis can be serious and you should seek medical attention.
- Severe eye pain
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision
- Purulent discharge from the eyes
- Redness and swelling of the eyelids
- Fire
- Conjunctivitis in newborns or people with weakened immune systems
It is always best to consult a doctor immediately to make sure that conjunctivitis is not a sign of a serious condition. Other serious complications of conjunctivitis include corneal ulcers, intraocular inflammation and sepsis.
However, all these complications can be eliminated with conjunctiva treatment and people can regain their old eye health as soon as possible.
