Recently, “smart lenses” is one of the most common terms we come across in eye health. We asked the most curious about smart lenses, which are the subject of scientific articles, to Op. Dr. Nail Sönmez, Chief Physician of Kudret Eye Istanbul.

What is a Intraocular Lens?

Kudret Eye Istanbul Chief Physician Op. Dr Nail Sönmez: “Intraocular lenses, popularly known as smart lenses, are medically called Trifocal lenses. Trifocal lenses are also known as three-dimensional vision. The reason for this is that it provides clear vision at both near, far and medium distances. Today’s people are more active in life in their middle and old age periods compared to the past. They use computers, drive vehicles and take an active part in life. Changing lifestyles have increased the need for clear vision at medium distance. Smart trifocal lenses provide comfort to today’s smart lives by providing clear vision at medium distance.”

Which diseases are treated with trifocal lenses?

Op. Dr Nail Sönmez: “We use trifocal lenses in the treatment of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, which cannot be laser applied because the corneal thickness is not suitable. In addition, we also apply trifocal lenses like multifocal lenses in the treatment of eyes with both cataracts and refractive errors. Trifocal lenses are especially preferred by patients over the age of 40 – 50 who want to say goodbye to their glasses. Over the age of 40, due to aging, the problem of nearsightedness, ie Presbyopia, begins to be seen. The lens of the eye loses its natural flexibility over time and loses its ability to focus on the close distance. Intraocular lens operations are among the most preferred and used methods in the treatment of presbyopia.”

Does it cause allergy, does it have side effects?

Kudret Eye Istanbul Chief Physician Op. Dr Sönmez: “Trifocal lenses are produced with advanced technology in accordance with the natural structure of the eye. Therefore, it is not possible for the eye not to accept or allergy. “How does the treatment process develop?” Op. Dr. Nail Sönmez: “As with every disease and complaint, patients should first undergo a detailed eye examination. After the diagnosis, a treatment plan should be drawn and it should be decided which intraocular lens will be applied in the surgery. Intraocular lenses are divided into three as monofocal, multifocal and trifocal. The patient’s lifestyle and needs should be determined as well as the structure of the eye in deciding the lens to be applied into the eye. Choosing the right lens is as important as the experience and expertise of the physician and the medical equipment of the institution.”

How long does the postoperative recovery period take?

Kudret Eye Istanbul Chief Physician Op. Dr Nail Sönmez: “The reactions we receive from the patients are that there is a significant improvement in vision the day after the operation. Employees can return to their work life within 1 – 2 days. Although the healing process varies from patient to patient, they can regain clarity of vision in a short period of a few days.”
